From the Classroom to the Real World: How Experiential Learning Develops Critical Thinkers

One of the questions I hear most often from faculty is, "How do we teach students to think critically?"


It's a fair question. Critical thinking appears in nearly every university mission statement and is consistently listed by employers as one of the most important career-ready skills. Yet it's also one of the hardest skills to teach through lectures, quizzes, and textbooks alone.


Critical thinking is more than remembering information for an exam. It is the ability to:

  • Analyze complex situations

  • Evaluate competing ideas and evidence

  • Interpret information within its context

  • Question assumptions

  • Synthesize ideas from multiple disciplines

  • Justify decisions

  • Apply knowledge in unfamiliar situations


These abilities are developed through practice, not memorization.

That is why experiential learning has become one of the most powerful teaching tools available in higher education.


Learning Begins When There Isn't an Answer Key


Inside a classroom, students often know there is a correct answer waiting somewhere in the textbook or lecture slides.

Outside the classroom, there usually isn't.

Real organizations face limited budgets, unexpected challenges, competing priorities, and incomplete information. Students must navigate uncertainty while making decisions that have real consequences.

That is where critical thinking begins.


The NFL Didn't Need Students Who Memorized Marketing Terms


Each year, I have the privilege of taking University of New England students to work alongside the National Football League during events such as the NFL Draft, the Super Bowl, and the NFL International Series.


Students often arrive believing the experience will simply reinforce what they've learned in class. Instead, they quickly discover that professional sport operations require constant critical thinking.


During the Super Bowl, students worked in fan engagement and event operations. Every shift required them to analyze situations in real time, communicate with diverse stakeholders, adapt when circumstances changed, and make decisions with limited information. They couldn't pause the event to ask a professor what to do next.

After the experience, many students reflected that they finally understood how leadership, marketing, communication, customer service, and operations all intersect. Concepts they had studied separately throughout their coursework suddenly became interconnected.


The experience didn't just teach them what happens at a mega-event.

It changed how they thought.


Iceland Taught Students That Sustainability Is Rarely Simple


Another example came from our Arctic Adventure Tourism course in Iceland.

Before traveling, students worked throughout the semester with Icelandic tourism organizations to develop recommendations for sustainable tourism initiatives. They researched destinations, analyzed visitor trends, and prepared professional presentations.


Once they arrived in Iceland, many discovered that the challenges were far more complex than they had anticipated. Balancing environmental conservation with economic development wasn't simply an academic discussion, it involved real communities, real businesses, and real people whose priorities sometimes conflicted.


Students had to reconsider assumptions they had made from thousands of miles away. They asked better questions, listened more carefully to local perspectives, and adjusted their recommendations based on what they learned firsthand. That process represents critical thinking in action. They weren't searching for the "correct" answer.

They were learning how to evaluate competing priorities and justify informed decisions.


Reflection Is Where the Learning Happens


Experiential learning is sometimes misunderstood as simply taking students on trips or giving them internships.

Experience alone doesn't guarantee learning.

Reflection is what transforms experience into education.

After each NFL event and international travel course, students participate in structured reflections that encourage them to think beyond what happened.

They ask themselves:

  • What surprised me?

  • What assumptions did I bring into this experience?

  • What decisions did I make, and why?

  • What would I do differently next time?

  • How does this connect to theories and concepts from class?

These conversations are where students begin recognizing their own growth as thinkers, professionals, and leaders.


AI Makes Critical Thinking Even More Important


As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of generating information, the value of simply knowing facts continues to decline. What AI cannot replace is the human ability to evaluate context, navigate ambiguity, exercise ethical judgment, build relationships, and make thoughtful decisions when there isn't a perfect solution.

These are precisely the skills students develop through experiential learning.

AI can generate answers. Critical thinkers determine whether those answers should be trusted.


Preparing Students for an Unscripted Future


The future workforce will reward graduates who can adapt to change, solve unfamiliar problems, and collaborate across disciplines. Those abilities cannot be fully developed through lectures alone. They emerge when students step into authentic environments, wrestle with uncertainty, reflect on their experiences, and connect classroom theory with real-world practice. Whether students are helping operate one of the world's largest sporting events, collaborating with tourism leaders in Iceland, or solving challenges for local businesses in their own communities, they are doing much more than gaining experience. They are learning how to think. And in a world where information is everywhere, teaching students how to think may be the most important lesson we can offer. I've come to believe that the goal of experiential learning isn't simply to give students experiences. It's to create moments where they must think differently than they did the day before. When students leave with better questions instead of just more answers, we've succeeded.
